FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is one of the most widely-recognized sustainability credentials in the print industry. Understanding what FSC certification means, what it does not mean, and how Canadian businesses can use it to credibly substantiate sustainability claims helps avoid greenwashing while honestly communicating responsible printing choices. What FSC Certification Actually Means
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organization that certifies forests and forest products according to specific environmental and social standards. FSC certification ensures:
- The forest is sustainably managed. Harvest rates do not exceed regeneration. Forest ecosystem health is maintained.
- Biodiversity is protected. Old-growth forests, endangered species habitat and high-conservation-value areas receive protection.
- Indigenous peoples’ rights are respected. Land use respects traditional rights and self-determination of indigenous communities.
- Workers’ rights and community welfare are protected. Fair wages, safe working conditions, local community involvement.
- Chain of custody is documented. The certified wood/paper can be traced from forest through processing to end product.
The Three FSC Label Types
- FSC 100%. All material in the product is from FSC-certified forests. Strongest claim.
- FSC Recycled. The product is made from 100% reclaimed material (post-consumer or pre-consumer recycled). Sustainability claim for closed-loop material use.
- FSC Mix. The product combines FSC-certified, controlled, and/or recycled materials. Most common label for commercial printing.
The label specifies which type so customers can interpret accurately. All three are legitimate FSC certifications.
What FSC Does Not Mean
- Not the same as recycled content. FSC-certified virgin paper from a responsibly-managed forest is FSC-certified but not recycled. Recycled paper that does not specify FSC may come from any source.
- Not a carbon-neutral claim. FSC addresses forest management; not the carbon footprint of paper production, transportation, or printing.
- Not a chemical-free claim. Bleaching agents, sizing chemicals and other paper-making additives may still be present.
- Not an organic claim. Distinct from organic certification.
How to Get FSC-Certified Printing in Canada
- Specify FSC at order time. Many Canadian printers (including Cheque Store on request) can print on FSC-certified stocks. Specify the certification type you want.
- Request FSC chain-of-custody documentation. The printer should be able to provide certification documentation for FSC-certified jobs.
- Use the FSC logo on materials. The FSC mark can appear on printed materials when the job is FSC-certified. Visible logo is a credibility signal.
- Verify the chain. Your printer should be FSC chain-of-custody certified to legitimately label your job with the FSC mark.
When FSC Certification Is the Right Choice
- Brand requires sustainability claim but recycled stock is not technically feasible. Coated stocks, photographic-quality materials, premium finishes, FSC virgin paper is often the alternative.
- B2B brand serving sustainability-conscious customers. Architects, environmental consultants, B Corps, sustainable fashion all benefit from FSC labeling.
- Government and educational tenders. Many institutional purchasing requirements specify FSC-certified materials.
- Annual reports and major publications. Public-facing materials where sustainability claims will face scrutiny.
When Recycled Stock Is the Better Choice Than FSC
- Closed-loop material use is the priority. Recycled stock diverts material from landfill; FSC manages new forest harvest. Different sustainability priorities.
- Audience explicitly values waste reduction. Eco-positioned brands often emphasize recycled content over FSC.
- Cost is a constraint. FSC-certified premium stocks often carry higher premiums than 30% post-consumer recycled.
FSC vs Other Certifications
- FSC vs PEFC. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is the other major forest certification system. Both are credible; FSC has stronger reputation among environmental NGOs.
- FSC vs SFI. SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) is more common in North American forestry. FSC is generally considered stricter.
- FSC vs Rainforest Alliance. Rainforest Alliance certifies tropical forestry; FSC covers temperate and boreal as well. Both are credible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FSC certification more sustainable than recycled paper?
Different sustainability dimensions. FSC addresses responsible new-forest management; recycled paper addresses waste diversion. Strongest claim combines both, FSC-certified recycled paper.
Does using FSC-certified paper cost more?
Typically 10-30% premium over equivalent non-certified virgin paper. The premium varies by stock weight, finish and specific certification.
Can I put the FSC logo on my printed materials?
Only if your printer is FSC chain-of-custody certified and the specific job uses FSC-certified stock. Specify both at order time and request documentation.
Does Cheque Store offer FSC-certified printing?
Yes, several of our premium stocks are FSC-certified. Specify FSC certification at order time and we will confirm options for your specific product.
Where does FSC certification fit in eco-printing strategy?
FSC is one of four eco-printing decision dimensions alongside recycled content, vegetable inks, and B Corp positioning. See our pillar guide, recycled stocks, vegetable inks, and B Corp positioning.
